Titanic in the News

A Lady in London goes on a Titanic Tour of Belfast.

Jeff Alderman is a professional model builder who constructs replicas of anything from houses and properties to aircraft and ships. His business, Grand Prix Reproductions, is located in Litchfield Park, Arizona. Recently Alderman was commissioned by Ed Kamuda, of the Titanic Historical Society in Indian Orchards, MA, to build some models for his museum. Alderman built Le Suroit, a French research vessel that searched for the Titanic, and Alvin, the submersible that dove down to the wreck. Alderman donated both of these models to the Titanic Historical Society Museum. You can read more details about this story in the South West Valley Republic and the West Valley View.

Huffington Post reports that the largest trove of artifacts recovered from the Titanic wreck site is to be sold at auction. The owner is putting the entire collection up as a single lot in 2012. This includes more than 5500 items. The auction is scheduled for April 1 by Guernsey's, a New York City auction house.

Screenrant reports that the British mini series Titanic will be coming to ABC Television in the US in 2012, to coincide with the hundred year anniversary of the sinking. The four part mini series began filming in Hungary last spring. The story line will focus on different characters from steerage to upper class, telling the story from their unique viewpoints.

Filming is underway in Belfast for a 12-part British mini series called Titanic: Blood and Steel. The setting for this series is before the Titanic sets sail, as it chronicles the social, political and economic issues around the time of her building.

ABC World News reports that Louise Patten, the granddaughter of the only senior officer to survive the wreck, Charles Lightoller, claims in a new book that the Titanic sank due to a steering error.

Society meetings and conventions

The Addergoole Titanic Society was established in November 2001 to commemorate the Titanic story of the “Addergoole Fourteen”, the fourteen steerage passengers from Addergoole who sailed on the Titanic. Of these fourteen, eleven perished. Three of the women survived. You can read about their fascinating stories on their web site. Join them for the Mayo (County) Titanic Cultural Week on April 8-15th, 2012. Events include a Titanic wake, a Titanic mass, the annual bell-ringing ceremony, a night of Irish song and poetry, and more.

Titanic International Society will hold its Convention 2012 in New York City on April 27-29, 2012. Festivities will include a luxury harbor cruise aboard the Spirit of New Jersey, a candlelight memorial reception, a Gala dinner and Midnight Madness auction. British Titanic Society will hold its 2012 convention at the De Vere Grand Harbour in Southampton on April 12-15, 2012. Activities include a sales fair, lectures, a themed gala dinner, wreath laying, a cinema visit to see the movie A Night To Remember, and more.

Titanic Historical Society is planning their next convention for April 20-22, 2012 in Springfield, Massachusetts. This will be a Centennial Memorial Weekend, and the highlight event will be the unveiling and dedication of a Titanic Centennial Memorial at Oak Grove Cemetery. The Great Lakes Titanic Society is an informal association of Titanic enthusiasts which got its start in the Great Lakes region.

Exhibitions and more crazy things.

Titanic Honor and Glory is a national (UK) touring Titanic and White Star Line exhibition. They have the largest collection of Titanic and White Star Line artifacts in Scotland, including both original artifacts and magnificent movie props and costumes from the James Cameron movie. They are exhibiting at the Down County Museum in Downpatrick until 4/15, when they will move to the Hull Maritime Museum.

The Titanic Trail is a fascinating guided tour that explores the town of Cobh in Cork Harbour, Ireland which was the last port of call of RMS Titanic.

The Irish Seaport town of Cobh will be holding events to commemorate the Titanic throughout 2012. You can see the whole schedule as well as more information about the town and its Titanic connections on their Titanic 100 web site.

There were 549 people from Southampton, England who lost their lives on the Titanic. Southampton has long had its Wool House Maritime Museum down on the Quay, and now it is getting ready to open a much larger museum called Sea City which will house the Titanic exhibits. Sea City will have two permanent and one temporary exhibit halls. One of the permanent exhibits will be "Titanic Story" and will focus on the hidden history of RMS Titanic's crew, also exploring what it was like to be in the Merchant Navy 100 years ago. The temporary exhibit opening in April of 2012 will be "Titanic, the Legend" and this will focus on the international fascination with the story of the Titanic.

The Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia, PA has an online exhibit titled Titanic Survivor, Selections from the Thayer Family Collection. The collection includes a Titanic Passenger List Booklet which you can flip through online.

The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum is hosting TITANICa: The Exhibition at the Transport Museum. Discover how local enterprise and skills were combined to produce vessels of exceptional quality and design. The exhibiton includes a number of Titanic artifacts. A related exhibit is TITANICa: The People's Story at the Folk Museum. Here you can explore the living history of the Titanic by walking and talking with the people who knew her best, dressed in period costumes.

The stunning Titanic Belfast Museum will open to the public in April of 2012. The building facade looks like the prow of a ship - four prows actually, facing different directions - and is covered with metal shards that glimmer in the sun. Have a look on YouTube below.

The Henry Ford Museum invites you to spend a special evening commemorating the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. The night will begin with a “1st class” champagne welcome and hors d'oeuvres. This is followed by a “2nd class” three-course dinner inspired by authentic White Star Lines menus. Dessert service will have a “3rd class” theme. Music, entertainment, a ceremony at the end of the evening and exclusive access to the Titanic Artifact Exhibition are all included in this exciting program.

Here is something crazy! James Cameron has scheduled a re-release of the Titanic movie for spring of 2012, which will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sinking. The movie will be in 3D this time! Cameron himself has voiced reservations about redoing 2D movies as 3D, but I guess he has figured out how to do it "properly." Will he throw in a bit of extra footage as an added incentive to watch the movie again? Probably not for a movie that's already 3+ hours. Will I go and see it? Probably, as will other Titanic fans. This is product repackaging at its most brilliant.
